Pamela`s career began in the late `50s innocently enough -- like millions of other girls, her first rock idol was Elvis; when he left for Germany in `59, she soon switched to Dion of Dion and the Belmonts, the guy who sang "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer." By `64, when the Beatles Invasion hit, she adored Paul McCartney; the Beatles represented her first attempt to meet a star. In the summer of `64 fourteen-year-old Pamela scaled the fence of the Bel-Air house they were renting while in L.A. to play the Hollywood Bowl; "I was close enough I could smell them," she said in an interview, "I wanted to get to know these people, it was just not enough to listen to their music." By age sixteen she loved Dylan`s music: "A huge change in my life ... finally someone was speaking for me," she said, "my whole life changed." A friend introduced her to cult rocker Captain Beefheart, who in turn introduced her to Rolling Stones Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts when they were in L.A. At this point she went to Mick Jagger`s hotel, but she ran off when he opened the door naked. At seventeen she visited the Sunset Strip one night in `65 and was overwhelmed by the colorful excitement of the flamboyantly dressed, festive kids on the street; she called the new counterculture "a whole new world" and dove into the fashions, fads, and music passionately. "No parent from that era could understand what kids were going through," she told an interviewer, "because it was totally unprecedented." She started hanging with the Byrds at Ciro`s, a popular club on the Strip: "I was moved by the music, it wreaked havoc inside me, it created thrills and joys inside my being and I wanted to be near it." She split from her high school boyfriend, graduated from Reseda`s Grover Cleveland High in June of `66, took various jobs to support her club-hopping clothes-buying lifestyle, and began seriously pursuing and romancing. |
